UK Visa from South Africa: 2026 Guide to Fees, Documents and Process

Planning a trip to London, Edinburgh or anywhere else in the United Kingdom? South African passport holders need a visa before they travel. This guide explains which visa you need, the official 2026 fees, the documents that make or break an application, how long it takes, and how to avoid the most common reasons for refusal.

Do South Africans Need a Visa for the UK?

Yes. South Africans have needed a visa for every visit to the UK since 2009, whether for a holiday, a family visit, business or a short course. There is no visa-free entry for South African passport holders.

The UK has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for some nationalities, but it is not available to South Africans. If a website offers you a UK ETA on a South African passport, do not use it.

Which UK Visa Do You Need?

Most South African travellers need the Standard Visitor visa. It covers:

  • Tourism and holidays
  • Visiting family or friends
  • Business activities such as meetings, conferences and negotiations
  • Short courses of study of up to six months
  • Private medical treatment

It allows you to stay for up to six months per visit. You cannot work, take up employment or claim public funds on a visitor visa. If you plan to work, study for longer, join a partner or family member, or settle in the UK, you will need a different visa, such as a Skilled Worker, Student or family visa.

How Much Does a UK Visa Cost in 2026?

The UK Home Office increased its fees on 8 April 2026. These are the official government fees, paid online in pounds when you apply:

Official UK visitor visa fees (from 8 April 2026)
Visa or serviceFee
Standard Visitor visa (up to 6 months)£135
Long-term visitor visa (2 years)£506
Long-term visitor visa (5 years)£903
Long-term visitor visa (10 years)£1,128
Priority service (optional extra)£500
Super Priority service (optional extra)£1,000

Long-term visitor visas let you visit as often as you need while they are valid, although each stay is still limited to six months. They are worth considering if you travel to the UK regularly. The visa application centre may also offer optional paid extras, such as premium lounges or courier return of your passport. Visa fees are not refunded if your application is refused.

Documents You Need for a UK Visitor Visa

There is no fixed checklist. The visa officer decides whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave the UK at the end of your trip, so your documents should tell a clear, consistent story:

  • A valid passport, plus previous passports that show your travel history
  • Recent bank statements, usually covering the last six months, showing you can afford the trip
  • Proof of employment, such as a letter confirming your position, salary and approved leave, or business documents if you are self-employed
  • Evidence of ties to South Africa, such as property, family or studies
  • Your travel plans, including an itinerary and accommodation details
  • An invitation letter and your host’s details if you are visiting family or friends
  • Certified translations of any documents not in English or Welsh

Clear, consistent evidence matters far more than a thick file. Every detail on your form should match your supporting documents.

How to Apply for a UK Visa from South Africa

  1. Apply online on GOV.UK and pay the visa fee.
  2. Book your biometrics appointment at a VFS Global visa application centre. VFS Global took over UK visa centres in South Africa from TLScontact in late 2024, so ignore older guides that still mention TLScontact.
  3. Prepare your supporting documents and upload or bring them as instructed.
  4. Attend your appointment to have your fingerprints and photograph taken.
  5. Wait for a decision and follow the instructions from UK Visas and Immigration to receive your visa and passport.

You can apply up to three months before you travel, so there is no need to leave it until the last minute.

How Long Does a UK Visa Take?

Standard processing takes around three weeks from your biometrics appointment. If you need a faster decision, Priority and Super Priority services are available for an extra fee where offered. Peak periods such as December, Easter and the mid-year school holidays can be busier, so apply as early as your plans allow.

Common Reasons UK Visas Are Refused

  • Weak ties to South Africa: not enough evidence that you will return home after your visit
  • Unexplained deposits: large or recent payments into your account without an explanation
  • Inconsistent information: details on the form that do not match your documents
  • An unclear purpose: no clear reason for the trip or a vague itinerary
  • Undisclosed history: previous refusals or immigration issues that were not declared

A refusal stays on your record and must be declared on future applications, for the UK and many other countries, so it pays to get your first application right.

Flights and Accommodation for Your UK Trip

Your application should include realistic travel plans, but avoid paying for non-refundable flights before your visa is approved. Our flight booking and accommodation booking services can line up your arrangements with your application dates.
