Planning a holiday in New York, a family visit in Florida or a business trip to the US? South African passport holders need a visa, and the process has changed more in the last year than in the decade before it. This guide covers the B1/B2 visitor visa, what it really costs in 2026, where you can now be interviewed, the documents you need and how to avoid the most common refusal.
Do South Africans Need a Visa for the USA?
Yes. South Africa is not part of the US Visa Waiver Program, so South Africans need a visa for every visit, whether for a holiday, a family visit or business. There is no ESTA option for South African passport holders. If a website offers you an ESTA on a South African passport, do not use it.
Which US Visa Do You Need?
Most South African travellers need the B1/B2 visitor visa, which is usually issued as a single combined visa:
- B1 (business): meetings, conferences, negotiations and consulting with business contacts
- B2 (tourism): holidays, visiting family or friends, and medical treatment
A visitor visa does not allow you to work or study in the US. Working, studying or moving there requires a different visa category, such as a student or work visa.
How Much Does a US Visa Cost in 2026?
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| B1/B2 visa application fee, paid before booking your interview and not refunded if refused | $185 |
| Visa integrity fee, created by US law in 2025 and charged only if your visa is issued | From $250 |
The visa integrity fee became law in July 2025, but collection has been rolled out unevenly across US embassies and consulates, and refunds are only possible under strict conditions after your visa expires. Budget for it, and check the current position on the US Embassy South Africa website before you apply.
Big Change for 2026: No More Durban Interviews
Since 1 August 2026, the US has ended routine visa services in Durban as part of a move to regional visa hubs across Africa. South African applicants now interview at the US consulates in Johannesburg or Cape Town. The US Embassy in Pretoria does not offer visa services.
Johannesburg and Cape Town now also process applications from several neighbouring countries, so appointment demand is higher. Applicants from KwaZulu-Natal should plan for travel to either city and book as early as possible.
Documents You Need for a US Visitor Visa
- A valid passport, ideally valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay, plus previous passports
- Your DS-160 confirmation page
- Your visa fee payment receipt and appointment confirmation
- A photo that meets US visa photo requirements
- Proof of employment, such as a letter confirming your position, salary and approved leave, or business documents if self-employed
- Recent bank statements showing you can fund your trip
- Evidence of ties to South Africa, such as property, family or studies
- Your travel plans, and an invitation letter if you are visiting family or friends
The DS-160 also asks for the social media usernames you have used in the last five years, so have them ready and answer honestly.
How to Apply for a US Visa from South Africa
- Complete the DS-160 online application form and save your confirmation page.
- Pay the $185 visa application fee through the official US visa appointment service.
- Book your interview at the US consulate in Johannesburg or Cape Town.
- Attend your interview with your passport, confirmation pages and supporting documents.
- Receive your passport with your visa if approved, through the delivery or collection option you chose.
What Happens at the Interview?
The interview is usually short, often only a few minutes. The consular officer will ask about the purpose of your trip, your job, your finances and your plans to return home. Answer honestly and concisely, and make sure your answers match your DS-160. Bring originals of your supporting documents, even though you may not be asked for them.
The most common reason for refusal is Section 214(b): the officer is not satisfied that you will return to South Africa after your visit. Strong evidence of employment, family and financial ties is the best way to address this.
How Long Does It Take?
The longest part is usually waiting for an interview appointment, which can range from weeks to several months depending on demand. Check the current wait times on the US Department of Stateβs website and apply at least three months before you plan to travel. After an approved interview, passports are usually returned within a week or two, although some applications need extra administrative processing that can take longer.
Common Reasons US Visas Are Refused
- Weak ties to South Africa: not enough evidence that you will return home
- Inconsistent answers: interview answers that do not match your DS-160
- An unclear purpose: no clear reason for the trip or an unrealistic itinerary
- Previous immigration issues: past overstays or undisclosed refusals
A 214(b) refusal is not permanent and you may reapply, but it is worth reapplying only once your circumstances or evidence have genuinely changed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do South Africans need a visa for the USA?
Yes. South Africa is not part of the US Visa Waiver Program, so South African passport holders need a visa, usually the B1/B2 visitor visa, for tourism, family visits or business trips.
How much does a US visa cost for South Africans in 2026?
The B1/B2 visa application fee is $185, paid before you book your interview and not refunded if you are refused. A new visa integrity fee of at least $250 was created by US law in 2025 and is charged only when a visa is issued, so budget for it and check the current position with the US Embassy before you apply.
Can South Africans apply for an ESTA?
No. ESTA is only for Visa Waiver Program countries. South Africans must apply for a visa and attend an interview, so avoid any website offering an ESTA on a South African passport.
Can I still apply for a US visa in Durban?
No. Since 1 August 2026, routine US visa services in Durban have ended. South African applicants now interview at the US consulates in Johannesburg or Cape Town. The US Embassy in Pretoria does not offer visa services.
How long is a US visa valid for South Africans?
B1/B2 visas for South Africans are often issued for up to ten years with multiple entries, but the consular officer decides the validity in each case. At the border, a US officer decides how long you may stay on each visit.
Do I need an interview for a US visa?
Most applicants must attend an in-person interview. The US has sharply limited interview waivers since 2025, although some people renewing a recently expired visa may still qualify. The appointment system will show whether you are eligible.
